One of the major perks of being on the Portland Modern Quilt Guild board is getting to hang out with the amazingly talented Susan Beal! She is such a sweet gal and is kind enough to spread around her wealth of books and knowledge. Which leads me to this post...Susan had the idea that Petra, Ale, Nancy, and I would each review a new sewing/quilting book and then give away copies at our monthly meetings! Such fun, right?
To start things off, I'm reviewing a copy of Scandinavian Stitches: 21 Playful Projects with Seasonal Flair by Kajsa Wikman published by Stash Books. I couldn't be more thrilled! I've been wanting to play around with applique and this gave me the courage to start! Scandinavian Stitches is filled with whimsical illustrations and playful words to applique.It's divided into the four seasons with projects that match. I choose the Sweet and Sour Apple Coasters to start with because they were so cute and would be a great first applique project.
The hardest part was deciding which fabric to use from my stash! After, hemming and hawing for awhile, I started tracing.
I never knew that cutting shapes out of fabric could be so much fun! I'm see many appliqued bags in my future...
I ran out of black thread, so I dug through my vintage thread collection and used some of this black thread!
Kajsa Wikman's has clearly written directions and really opened my eyes to the world of applique! There are many new projects that I'd love to make from this book (including that Sew Me Pincushion on the front cover). After reading this book, you'll begin to see that you can turn any illustration into an applique project! Thanks again to Stash Books for giving PMQG a copy to raffle away!
